Healthy Brownies

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Healthy Brownies are chocolatey, decadent and fudgy. They are a great treat to satisfy those sweet tooth cravings without all of the extra calories.

Three pieces of healthy brownies stacked on top of one another with mini chocolate chips surrounding the brownies and a container of cocoa powder in the left background.

Guilty of indulging in a few too many treats over the holiday season? Thinking about eating healthier to promote a more balanced lifestyle? Healthy Brownies are going to be your new best friend. How could brownies possibly be healthy? First, we have completely eliminated all of the butter from this recipe and replaced it with Greek yogurt for a protein boost. Next, we have removed any processed sugars and replaced them with maple syrup. Finally, we are using mini chocolate chips in place of regular size chocolate chips because we can use less chocolate without compromising the taste. Don't worry there is melt in your mouth chocolate in every bite. Healthy Brownies are a great way to get back on track with your health and fitness goals without having to give up sweets.

Ingredients

Ingredients for healthy brownies measured and laid out on a brown wooden surface.
  • Greek Yogurt - I used 0% no sugar added.
  • Maple Syrup - Used to sweeten the brownies.
  • Large Eggs - Helps to bind the other ingredients together.
  • Milk - I used skim milk in this recipe.
  • Cocoa Powder - Used to create that classic chocolate taste.
  • All-Purpose Flour - I used all-purpose flour for this recipe. I haven't tried this recipe using any other type of flour.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips - Because extra chocolate is always a good idea!

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8x8 baking pan with parchment paper.

Wet ingredients in a large white bowl with a metal whisk leaning on the side of the bowl.

In a large bowl, add eggs, Greek yogurt, maple syrup and milk. Whisk to combine.

Brownie batter in a large white bowl with a blue spatula leaning on the side of the bowl.

Sift flour and cocoa powder into the wet ingredients. Use a spatula to fold in the flour and cocoa powder.

Pour batter into prepared baking pan.

Baked healthy brownies in a square metal baking pan lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool before cutting into slices. Makes 16 brownies.

Hint: Make sure to line the baking pan with parchment paper. This prevents the brownies from sticking but it also makes for an easier clean-up.

Substitutions

  • Maple Syrup - Liquid honey can be substituted for the maple syrup.
  • Greek Yogurt - I used 0% no sugar added. You could substitute with 2% or higher or with varieties that have added sugar if you choose.
  • Milk - Any plant based on non plant based milk can be used.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips - Feel free to use regular chocolate chips if you prefer.

Equipment

8x8 Baking Pan - You can use a 9x9 baking pan but the brownies will be thinner. Do not use a 9x13 baking pan as there is not enough batter to cover the pan.

Storage

Healthy Brownies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container or bag for up to three days.

Healthy Brownies freeze well. Store brownies in a freezer safe container or bag and free up to three months. Thaw when ready to eat.

Top Tip

Make sure to sift the flour and cocoa powder before adding it to the batter because this helps to prevent lumps.

FAQ

What if I don't have mini chocolate chips?

Use regular chocolate chips instead. I like mini chocolate chips because they ensure you get melt in your mouth chocolate in every bite.

Are these brownies actually healthy?

Yes! One of these brownies has only 82 calories and 2 grams of fat. Make sure to eat more than one!
